Jake Gyllenhaal Saw Patrick Swayze's “Dirty Dancing” 'Three Times in a Row in the Same Weekend': 'I Was Raised By Him'

Gyllenhaal stars in the new remake of Swayze's 'Road House'

Jake Gyllenhaal is a big Patrick Swayze fan.

During an appearance on Monday's Late Night with Seth Meyers, Gyllenhaal, 43, spoke about playing Dalton in Prime Video's Road House. The original 1989 movie starred the late Swayze, who died on Sept. 14, 2009 at age 57 after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Gyllenhaal, who featured alongside Swayze in 2001's Donnie Darko, explained how he was a big fan of the late actor's movies. "I think I've watched Road House probably like 10 times, I've watched Point Break maybe 500 times," the Brokeback Mountain star told Meyers, 50.

However, one movie that stands out to him is 1987's Dirty Dancing as it played a big part in his childhood.

"I've watched Dirty Dancing maybe a little bit less than that, but my sister [Maggie] took me to see Dirty Dancing in the theater, and we saw it three times in a row in the same weekend," Gyllenhaal recalled. Swayze starred as dance instructor Johnny Castle alongside Jennifer Grey's Frances "Baby" Houseman in the beloved film.

Gyllenhaal continued of the late Swayze, "I realized I was raised by him," adding: "He was always so kind to me. He was always so supportive and kind, and, yeah, there's like pressure but he also had a great sense of humor, so I think he would get a kick out of it, you know but, yeah, he raised me."

Jake and his sister Maggie Gyllenhaal both starred alongside Swayze in Donnie Darko. Jake played the titular character, while Maggie starred as his sister Elizabeth in the film. Meanwhile, Swayze starred as motivational speaker Jim Cunningham.

Ahead of Road House's Prime Video release on March 21, Gyllenhaal paid tribute to Swayze on Instagram, sharing a throwback photo of the pair from 2003.

"I’ve been thinking back about my time working with Patrick on Donnie Darko, and rewatching this great man in the original Road House plus so many other films. I’ve never stopped being a fan," he wrote in the caption.

"He was such a talent and I continue to have so much respect and admiration for what he put out and into the world. I’ll never forget his kindness to me when I was starting out— he didn’t have to take the time, but he always did. We’ve made a different RH this time around, but hoping it’s one he would’ve had fun watching!"
