The actor finds himself at the center of a murder trial after a steamy affair, despite his marriage — and two kids — in the new Apple TV+ limited series

Jake Gyllenhaal is a man in love — and a man on trial.

In the first teaser for Presumed Innocent, a new Apple TV+ limited series, Gyllenhaal stars as chief deputy prosecutor Rusty Sabich, who finds himself at the center of a murder investigation when his mistress is found dead.

“Love isn’t what people tell you that it is. In my experience, it’s just something that grows, until one day, you just find yourself needing someone," Gyllenhaal's Rusty says in the teaser as clips are shown of him with his wife and children.

"That’s how it was with Carolyn," Rusty admits, as a series of passionate scenes flash, showing him in bed with another woman. "She woke something up inside me."

"I can’t stop thinking about her," he says of Carolyn, his mistress, before scenes flash of police cars and a crime scene.

Gyllenhaal's character is then asked, “Were you aware that Carolyn was murdered?”

The limited series premiering on June 12, based on The New York Times bestselling novel by Scott Turow, "takes viewers on a gripping journey through the horrific murder that upends the Chicago Prosecuting Attorney’s office when one of its own is suspected of the crime," according to an official synopsis.

"The series explores obsession, sex, politics, and the power and limits of love, as the accused fights to hold his family and marriage together."

Along with Gyllenhaal, 43, Presumed Innocent stars Ruth Negga as Gyllenhaal's wife, Renate Reinsve as his mistress, along with Bill Camp, Elizabeth Marvel, Peter Sarsgaard and O-T Fagbenle.

The 1987 novel was previously adapted into a film in 1990 starring Harrison Ford in the lead role of Rusty Sabich alongside Bonnie Bedelia and Greta Scacchi.

Gyllenhaal was most recently seen on the screen in Road House, a remake of the 1989 Patrick Swayze film that saw him take on the role of a former UFC fighter who becomes a bar bouncer at a roadhouse in the Florida Keys following the end of his fighting career.

He told PEOPLE at the film’s SXSW premiere in March that it took a “village” for him to physically prepare for the role, as he trained for “an hour and a half every day before work.”

"I'll tell you that being where I am — 10 years ago I made Southpaw, which is another fight movie, and I was in a different place,” he said. “My body was, I knew that I needed help with nutrition and I knew I needed to keep myself safe from injury and I needed to also be able to have the aesthetics of the whole role.”
