Jake Gyllenhaal turned 43 on Tuesday, and he celebrated with a nod to his upcoming film.

In an Instagram post Wednesday, Gyllenhaal thanked his followers and fans “for all the birthday wishes” as he shared a photo of himself smiling at a dinner table with a mostly-eaten birthday cake, a candle and drinks.

He was wearing a Patrick Swayze shirt, an ode to the actor who originated the role of John Dalton in 1989’s Road House, which Gyllenhaal is reprising in an upcoming remake.

The reimagined version will see Gyllenhaal as a former UFC fighter who "takes a job as a bouncer at a rough-and-tumble roadhouse in the Florida Keys, but soon discovers that not everything is what it seems in this tropical paradise," according to a synopsis.

On Thursday, fans got their first glimpse at the actor in the film in two clips shown in Prime Video’s sizzle reel for 2024 as they teased the movie.

In the brief first look, Gyllenhaal’s impressive physique was on display as he stood shirtless in a ring, and in the next clip a brawl broke out as he slapped three men, dodged punches from another and dominated in a street fight.

Production began on the film in the Dominican Republic in 2022, and in March, the Southpaw star was seen onstage at a UFC event as he filmed a scene at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

A clip of the moment was shared online and showed Gyllenhaal's character entering the stadium for a weigh-in, trying to hype up crowds as he walked onstage. He then took off a sweatshirt with the "UFC" logo, showing off his muscles as he stepped onto the scale.

"Official weight: 184 and a half for the challenger, Elwood Dalton," an announcer said. Gyllenhaal then flexed his muscles and posed as cheers erupted from the crowd, before he shook hands with UFC president Dana White.

MMA world champion Jay Hieron, playing Dalton's competitor Jack Harris, then stepped up next, to be weighed in at 185 lbs. He and Gyllenhaal were seen exchanging words, before Gyllenhaal slapped Hieron, 46, in a dramatic moment for filming.

A few minutes before Gyllenhaal came onstage, UFC star Conor McGregor announced to the crowd at the arena that the scene would be filmed for the movie

"We've got the biggest fight in Road House history, Harris versus Dalton UFC 222," McGregor, 35, said. "Everyone in this arena, you're about to be part of my movie that's coming out with myself, Jake Gyllenhaal and A Joel Silver production. Make sure to cheer for the weigh-ins and let's go Las Vegas."
