Jaime King was out protesting for the Black Lives Matter movement in Los Angeles when she, along with fellow protestors, was arrested by local police. Like so many others, King was horrified by the death of George Floyd, the latest in a string of unarmed, innocent black men killed without cause. Knowing that protestors across the country have faced violence unreported in major news outlets, King made sure to carefully document her experience with the police on Twitter, and the details are enraging — if, at this point, unsurprising.

After a day spent protesting, King gave her first update to fans from the back of a police bus, emphasizing that she and her fellow protestors had been entirely peaceful prior to their arrest. “Currently arrested for a peaceful protest. Writing in handcuffs in back of bus. EVERYONE WAS PEACEFUL. – Jaime and the rest of my sisters on this bus. 77th precinct.”

Hours later, King’s situation hadn’t resolved, and noted that the women beside her were facing health risks from the officers’ refusal to let them access medicine or even use a bathroom.

Currently still on the bus for over 4 hours. Took us from 77th precinct to San Pedro,” she wrote. “Women w/no access to vital meds, bathrooms, bleeding through their pants. They are laughing at us. #BlackLivesMattter.”

With updates coming in by the second, social media has proven a vital resource for seeing what these brave protestors are really facing on the ground. We’re hopeful that celebrities using their platform to raise awareness can help finally effect real change.
