There’s been a lot of curiosity surrounding Jada Pinkett Smith’s marriage to Will Smith over the years, particularly after her “entanglement” with August Alsina and his Oscars slap heard ’round the world. With her memoir, Worthy, publishing on Oct. 17, the 52-year-old actress is ready to share the jaw-dropping truth about the state of her union.

Her book reveals that she and Will have been separated since 2016 which might be a hard revelation for fans to wrap their brains around because they’ve continued to show a united front in public. Today Show anchor Hoda Kotb didn’t let Jada off easy during their interview, noting that even though she comes off as a “straight talker,” she hasn’t been honest with her fans. Jada explained why it took so long for this secret to be revealed to the world after years of rumors and headlines about their marriage.
“I think just not being ready yet,” she said. “Still trying to figure out between the two of us how to be in partnership, right? And in regard to how do we present that to people, you know? And we hadn’t figured that out.” That’s an understandable sentiment because Will and Jada were a Hollywood power couple — and they probably needed to feel secure in their new chapter before they let the world in. However, that doesn’t answer the reason as to why they split in the first place.

“Why it fractured, that’s a lot of things,” Jada admitted. “By the time we got to 2016, we were just exhausted with trying. I think we were both still stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be.” So should fans expect an official divorce? It doesn’t look like that will happen. “I made a promise that her will never be a reason for us to get a divorce,” Jada shared. “We will work through whatever and I just haven’t been able to break that promise.” Even with that hopeful note, the couple currently lives apart and is pursuing lives separate from each other.
