Jacquie Lee honors her friend Christina Grimmie and many others the world lost this year with her emotional new song and video “Somebody’s Angel.”

The song was inspired by Grimmie’s death, after the former star of The Voice was fatally shot while signing autographs after a concert in June. In the video, Lee, also a contestant on The Voice contestant, remembers the many moments of loss in 2016.

“Obviously Christina inspired the song, but it woke me up to all of the tragedies that go on every day,” Lee told People. “I feel like those words really helped me get through Christina’s passing, so I wanted to make it open to everyone and tribute every person that we’ve lost this year.”

The song features classic ballad electric guitar plucking, erupting in the chorus with a choir backing Lee’s emotional delivery. She says it was written as an homage to her favorite of Grimmie’s covers, Elvis Presley‘s “I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You.”

Meanwhile, the video shows Lee painting the image of a television set, which then shows news coverage of 2016’s many tragic deaths. Headlines of lost icons such as David Bowie, Prince, Leonard Cohen and Gene Wilder are intercut with images of the Orlando nightclub shooting, terror attacks, Black Lives Matter Protests, natural disasters and more tragedies from all around the world. It ends with video of Grimmie and Lee singing karaoke on the first night of 2014’s The Voice tour in San Antonio.

“I felt like this year we really needed it,” said Lee. “We needed to all feel like we were taking this on together, especially near the holidays.”
