Jacob Elordi has a chilling new role alongside Zachary Quinto.

On Thursday, Vertical shared the first trailer for He Went That Way exclusively with PEOPLE. The film, set in 1964, follows the 26-year-old Priscilla actor as Bobby, a young man hitchhiking who is picked up by a celebrity animal trainer named Jim (Quinto). As they drive across Route 66, Jim begins to realize Bobby is actually a serial killer.

The trailer shows Bobby speaking about his friendship with Jim to two police officers. He seemingly admits to committing multiple murders before the trailer flashes back to the pair's time on the road together with a chimpanzee named Spanky, whom Jim trains for TV and film appearances.

After Jim realizes Bobby is committing crimes across the country, he tries to make a deal with the killer to take him as far as Chicago and then part ways amicably. Jim eventually tries to convince Bobby he should come clean and turn from a criminal lifestyle.

A synopsis for the movie describes it as "a taut thriller based on a true crime story that puts a wicked spin on the buddy road trip film."

Jim first meets Bobby "on a desolate stretch of Route 66 with priceless cargo in tow: Jim's chimpanzee, Spanky, an American TV darling," as the synopsis reads. "As stress between Bobby and Jim rises and their fiery personalities combust, the road only becomes more treacherous the farther they go."

The movie completed filming a short time before his sudden death, The Hollywood Reporter noted at the time. Evan M. Wiener wrote the script.

He Went That Way is in select theaters Jan. 5, then on demand Jan. 12.
