Jacob Elordi opens up about being ‘bothered’ by objectifying comments: ‘I hated every second of it’

The actor is tired of everyone commenting on his body rather than his acting prowess.

After getting cast as the “hot older brother” in Netflix’s “The Kissing Booth,” 23-year-old Jacob Elordi has been the object of many teens’ and tweens’ affection. However, while the Australian actor is grateful for the doors the movie opened, he’s also tired of everyone commenting on his body rather than his prowess as an actor.

“At the time, I was super young and got thrown into a world where everyone wanted to talk about my body … it really f****** bothered me,” Elordi told Men’s Health. “I don’t identify with that whatsoever. I was trying to prove myself and be known as an actor. It was so much working out and I hated every second of it.”

While filming the first “Kissing Booth,” Elordi says that he was in the gym working out seven days a week, twice a day. He “trained extensively” with heavy weights to become what the script wanted him to be — but in the process, his washboard abs became the only thing anyone could pay attention to.

Thankfully, when Elordi was cast as troubled teen Nate Jacobs on HBO’s “Euphoria,” he had a chance to abandon the gym — not just for his own mental health, but also for Nate’s.

“I wanted to go from being bigger to smaller as Nate goes through his mental transition,” Elordi explained.

Once it came time to film “The Kissing Booth 2,” the actor decided to stick with his new relaxed workout regimen. And it certainly didn’t hurt the movie: According to Forbes, the sequel is about to become the fifth movie to hold the No. 1 movie spot on Netflix for eight days in a row.

Looking forward, Elordi hopes to take on more mature roles that transcend the hot high school jock stereotype.

“Nothing against that but I’ve sort of done it and it would be really hard for me to find joy in that,” he told GQ Australia. “I’m also getting older now, and I’m starting to look older, so to keep going back to high school is kind of taxing.”

Filming on season 2 of “Euphoria” has been halted due to the global pandemic. However, Netflix recently announced that the third installment of “The Kissing Booth” wrapped up production before quarantine, so there will be plenty more Elle/Noah drama coming to your screen in 2021.
