Jacob deGrom after another Mets loss: 'I'm frustrated. I'm tired of losing'

Jacob deGrom has every reason to be frustrated with the New York Mets. Despite a major-league low 1.84 ERA, deGrom can’t seem to pick up wins with the club.

While deGrom has handled the team’s poor play with a level head throughout the season, it seems the Mets have finally broken him.

Following Saturday’s 5-2 loss to the Miami Marlins, deGrom told reporters he was “frustrated and “tired of losing.”

Why is Jacob deGrom frustrated and tired of losing?

deGrom is frustrated that the team has been awful in 2018. After getting off to a strong start, the team has plummeted to 33-48 on the season. They have the fewest wins in the National League.

There’s also probably some frustration over how the team has performed when deGrom has been on the mound. More often than not, he’s given the Mets a chance to win. deGrom leads Major League Baseball in ERA, but sits at just 5-4. Wins are no longer recognized as a useful stat, but if you sort by fWAR, many of the pitchers who have been as good as deGrom have much better records.

Jacob deGrom is not the reason the Mets are losing

Between April 21 and June 18, deGrom made 11 starts. He gave up just seven earned runs over 70 1/3 innings. He went 3-2 over that stretch. In that period, deGrom had seven starts in which he gave up between zero and two runs that the Mets failed to win for him. He either received a no-decision or a loss.

The Mets will listen to trade offers on Jacob deGrom

deGrom may get his wish soon. Assistant general manager John Ricco admitted the team would listen to trade offers for both deGrom and Noah Syndergaard. The 30-year-old deGrom is making $7.4 million in 2018, and has two more years of team control before he is a free-agent in 2021.

Given deGrom’s production and contract status, it will take a lot for a team to pry him away from the Mets. That might wind up being beneficial to both sides. The Mets would get numerous impact players for deGrom, and he would pitch for a team that actually wins games once and a while.
