Jack Quaid on “The Boys” season 4 bringing in Hughie's mom: 'Campbell family chaos'

The star also talks about his former "Vinyl" costar joining the ranks and getting to work with Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

It's a big ol' family reunion on The Boys season 4, which isn't exactly the best thing for Jack Quaid's Hughie Campbell.

At long last, viewers will finally get to meet Hughie's absentee mom by way of Rosemarie DeWitt, seen recently guest starring on And Just Like That season 2.

Past seasons of the R-rated Amazon series gave us bits and pieces about this elusive character. We know she walked out on Hughie and his dad when he was just 6 years old, and she directly plays into the character's love of Billy Joel. "It's a big reason why he is the way he is: loyal to a fault, doesn't want to be alone," Quaid tells Entertainment Weekly.

Details on how DeWitt's role plays into the season are still under wraps for now, including what Hughie's mom's name is exactly. But Quaid further teases, "What she does with the character is wonderful."

Simon Pegg also returns as Hugh Campbell, Hughie's dad. Working with him and DeWitt was "some of the more fulfilling work" Quaid has ever done in his career thus far, he says, "just to watch the two of them work and learn so much from them. We had a blast. We became a weird family. I'm very excited for audiences to see the Campbell family chaos this year because it's pretty great."

The Boys season 4 sees America on the brink of all-out chaos. (Hard to relate, we know!) With a new supe, Sister Sage (Susan Heyward), whispering diabolical plans into Homelander's (Antony Starr) ear, the star-spangled strongman has big plans to turn all supes into wrathful gods instead of pandering celebrities. Meanwhile, with mere months left to live as his Temp V–induced cancer ravages his body, Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) has discovered a supe-killing virus that could change the tide in their ongoing fight against Vought.

The story sees Quaid reuniting with Heyward after working with her on HBO's Vinyl. He calls her performance as Sister Sage, who's power is being the smartest person in the world, "a very interesting new wrench to throw into the works." He adds, "She definitely ratchets up the stakes in ways that I don't think will be super clear to people initially, but will eventually dawn on you."

The Boys also finds him reuniting with another cast member: Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who has a mysterious role on season 4. The two co-star on the indie film Nowhere Men, which they already filmed.

"It's like a two-hander. It reminds me of a lot of movies from the '70s about two unlikely people bonding and doing something together," Quaid explains. "Jeffrey Dean was someone they were thinking about, and I'm like, 'I've worked with him technically twice''; we're both in Rampage together from forever ago. I don't think we ever saw each other on that set, but then he showed up on The Boys, and, god, he is just such a standup guy."

The Boys will premiere three episodes of season 4 this June 13 on Prime Video before moving to a weekly rollout.
