Ja Rule Reveals Mary J. Blige’s “Rainy Dayz” Was Originally Written For TLC

In an upcoming episode of TV One’s UNCENSORED with Ja Rule, the New York star opened up about various topics including his parenting style, run-ins with the law, and a 9/11-inspired song he wrote that was originally meant for TLC.
Following the tragic terrorist attacks that took place in NYC on Sept. 11, 2001, Ja Rule wrote the Mary J. Blige-assisted song, “Rainy Dayz” as a way of giving people hope. While speaking of the song, Rule revealed that the Irv Gotti-produced track was originally for T-Boz, Left Eye, and Chilli.
“I felt like the world was going through a rainy day,” he said. “That is what I felt like we were going through, and that sunny day would come and we would all be shining and smiling and happy again. I wrote it for TLC because I just heard them over the record. I heard their voices.”
He continued, “So I wrote it, referenced it, and brought it in to L.A. Reid. I let L.A hear the record, and I’m like, ‘L.A, got to get this to TLC.’ He calls T-Boz, and I got T on the phone, I’m like, ‘T, you got to hear this f**king record.’ I’m singing it to her and sh*t, and she’s like, ‘Yo, that sh*t is dope.”
Explaining how the record ended up in Mary’s hands, he added, “As I’m doing all of this, Mary peeks in and the record’s playing loud. Mary peeks her head in and comes in. She’s like, ‘What the f**k is this?’ He’s like, ‘This new record Ja just wrote for TLC.’ Mary’s like, ‘F**k that, I want this record.’ Opened the sh*t, took the cassette, took the CD, broke the f**k out with the sh*t. I didn’t even have a copy of it no more. She recorded it and did what she did to it. It’s magic. After that, it was her record and that was that,” he said.
“Rainy Dayz” went on to peak at No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 8 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs.
