When Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner were planning their move to Washington, DC, after Donald Trump's election in 2016, many speculated about the roles that the incoming president's daughter and son-in-law would play in the White House.

As senior White House advisors, both were influential in policy debates about issues from paid family leave to Middle East peace proposals.

The former White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham wrote in her memoir, "I'll Take Your Questions Now," which The Washington Post obtained ahead of publication, that the couple also sought to wield their power to attend a meeting with Queen Elizabeth II in June 2019.

Grisham, who also served as the chief of staff and press secretary to first lady Melania Trump, said Ivanka and Kushner fancied themselves royalty, according to The Post.

Grisham said, according to The Post, that the couple tried to muscle their way into a meeting with the Queen, the president, and the first lady - something that would have defied protocol for a state visit - but were prevented from joining because there was no space in the helicopter.

"I finally figured out what was going on," Grisham reportedly wrote. "Jared and Ivanka thought they were the royal family of the United States."

Grisham recalled in the book, set to be released next Tuesday, that the first lady and the White House staff called Ivanka "the Princess" and that Ivanka would often refer to the president as "my father" in work meetings, The Post reported.

The former press secretary also reportedly referred to Kushner as "the Slim Reaper" because of what she described as his tendency to involve himself with others' projects and then remove himself when problems arose.

During her tenure as press secretary, Grisham never conducted regular press briefings, instead giving television interviews to select media outlets.

After less than a year as the White House press secretary, Grisham, who was succeeded by the political commentator Kayleigh McEnany, became Melania Trump's press secretary.
