Writer-producer-actress Issa Rae recently spoke to Yahoo Entertainment as part of its video interview series Game Changers, which highlights the diverse creators disrupting Hollywood — and the pioneers who paved the way.

Rae's HBO series Insecure, which is concluding with its upcoming fifth season, has been a breakout critical success and spearheaded the ongoing conversation over diversity in TV and film both onscreen and off. Rae explained how its been an uphill battle.

"I've been spoiled by Insecure, obviously, since it was my show, but to go on other sets and see like, 'Oh, y'all, didn't even try' ... like it's all white dudes," she said.

She explained the consequences of not hiring diverse talent, saying, "You're never going to prioritize it because if it's not now, you've wasted an opportunity that could have been given to someone who needs it for their next experience."
