Issa Rae stars in the highly-anticipated Barbie film as President Barbie, and as the commander-in-chief of Barbie Land, the actress leads in style. Despite the vibrant pink aesthetic displayed in the film’s trailer and a handful of stylish red-carpet looks, the 38-year-old was apprehensive about wearing the hue.

“I hate the color pink. I’ve never thought that I looked good in pink …” shared the Insecure creator with The Guardian, continuing, “But I’ve been taking one for the team!”

Despite her reservations, the acclaimed director and the entire cast of Barbie have painted the world pink, wearing fuschia tones, pastel prints, and rosy accessories across the globe to promote their film ahead of the SAG-AFTRA strike, which has essentially halted Hollywood. Directed by Greta Gerwig, the star-studded film is set to hit theaters on July 21.

“Fortunately Greta’s movie was inclusive of Barbies with all different body types and in that way, I felt less pressure and less down on myself,” described the media mogul of her experience working on the summer blockbuster. “I think it’s just that we’ve internalized so much about Barbie … it has become representative of the perfect female body and also denigrated as a bimbo in some ways. But I think the company aims for it not to be that, and I think the movie aims to have a conversation about that.”

Alongside the Lovebirds actress, Barbie is led by Margot Robbie as the titular character and Ryan Gosling as, well…just Ken. Additionally, America Ferrera, Hari Nef, Ncuti Gatwa, Michael Cera, Dua Lipa, John Cena, Ritu Arya, Alexandra Shipp, Nicola Coughlan, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, and Will Ferrell are all residents of Barbie Land.
