Isabelle Huppert Talks ‘Elle’, ‘Things To Come’ & ‘Souvenir’ – Video
Isabelle Huppert had no fewer than three features in this year’s Toronto International Film Festival and tonight she has a double feature at the New York Film Festival with Things to Come and Elle at Alice Tully Hall. It’s just evidence of how in-demand one of France’s biggest stars is, more than 100 films into a career on the big screen that started when she was a teenager. She first wowed this year at Berlin, in Mia Hansen-Løve’s Things to Come, and rocked the Cannes Croisette with Paul Verhoeven’s Elle a few months later. Both films were also gathered at TIFF together with Bavo Defurne’s Souvenir, which received its North American premiere there. A fourth project, Tout de suite maintenant, released in France in June.
Huppert stopped by Deadline’s studio to discuss her slate this year, drawing parallels and pointing out differences between the various projects. The director, she told me, was still the most important factor in picking projects. “It’s all about meeting certain directors, and it’s not something you can predict,” she said. “It’s such a personal statement each time, so each director would be different and that’s the beauty of the adventure.”
Remarkably, Huppert has never been nominated for an Oscar, despite a string of stellar work internationally and in her native France that has seen her Cesar Award-nominated 15 times. This year’s trio of films might change things. She was a favorite for the Best Actress prize in Cannes for Elle before Jaclyn Jose was announced for Ma’ Rosa, and critics are still high on her performance in Verhoeven’s film. She talks about all three of her films this year in our exclusive video interview above.
