Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, and Harris Dickinson discuss their hairy transformation in A24’s new wrestling drama.

Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, and Harris Dickinson prepared for The Iron Claw by transforming their bodies and their hair.

The three actors star in writer-director Sean Durkin's highly anticipated wrestling drama (out Dec. 22), playing three members of the real-life Von Erich family: Kevin (Efron), David (Dickinson), and Kerry (White). The Von Erich brothers conquered the ring in the 1970s and '80s, and in EW's recent cover story, the three film stars explained how they transformed themselves into pro wrestlers — wigs and all.

Most of their preparation involved bulking up and learning how to properly execute wrestling moves, but they also heaped praise on the film's hair and makeup team. In fact, they were surprised they never lost a wig in the wrestling ring, even after all those flying leaps and body slams.

"I'm shocked they stayed on!" Efron says. "We put those things through hell."

"They really got smashed about," White adds.

"It was a team effort, and we had some of the best hair and makeup," Efron continues. "I remember distinctly being pulled by my wig in one of the earlier fights, and I couldn't believe it was still on."

Dickinson and Efron both sported full wigs in the ring, while White mostly just wore his natural hair with extensions. Efron jokes how they spent so much time together in full costume that if he saw his onscreen brothers with their regular hair, he would have "walked right by" them.

"It became a part of me to the point where I hardly saw you guys without it," Efron explains.

"The first time I saw you without it, I was like, 'Hmm, that's not right, is it?'" White says with a laugh.

Dickinson says that he felt so at home in his costume, he even took it for a quick trip off set.

"I went to get a coffee once on a lunch break," he remembers. "I walked around the corner to a coffee shop with a wig on, and I was wearing a tight '70s tee. I just wanted to see if anyone would bat an eye. And no one did."

The Iron Claw chronicles the Von Erich family's rise to fame, following in the footsteps of their retired wrestler father Fritz Von Erich (Holt McCallany). For more on the film, read EW's full cover story.
