Westfield Garden State Plaza is working to become a North Jersey food destination.
In the last month two new restaurants have opened in what the mall calls "the restaurant district": Seasons 52, a grill and wine bar, and Eddie V's, a 9,630-square-foot seafood and steak restaurant. And this fall, Fogo de Chao, a two-story Brazilian steakhouse and bar, is slated to open in the district. All are national chains.
And here comes still another: Sa’Moto, Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto's pan-Asian restaurant. The restaurant, which replaces a Kids Foot Locker shop, is scheduled to open in six to eight months.
“The restaurant district is unlike most food courts; it offers elevated sit-down restaurants, not just grab-and-go meals,” said Lisa Hermann, senior director of marketing for the Garden State Plaza.
In case you're not a familiar with Morimoto: He is a Japan-born celebrity chef who has received numerous awards including a James Beard Foundation Award and a Michelin star, and his restaurant Morimoto Napa was named one of the "Best US Restaurant Openings" by Food & Wine. He has authored two cookbooks — "Mastering The Art of Japanese Home Cooking" (Ecco, 2016) and "Morimoto: The New Art of Japanese Cooking" (DK, 2007).
There are branches of Sa' Moto in Manhattan and West Hollywood. The menus feature dim sum items such as spicy chicken wonton and crab spring rolls as well as appetizers like popcorn shrimp and spicy edamame. Ramen dishes include chicken wonton with ramen noodles and a miso-glazed fried tofu vegan soup.
