#TBT: Irene From ‘The Real World: Seattle’ Shares Her Post-Slap Therapy Story
It was the slap heard ’round the world.
In 1998, on The Real World: Seattle, cast member Irene McGee was infamously smacked upside the head by roommate Stephen Williams as she was leaving the house (and the show).
In the nearly two decades since the “Irene Calls It Quits” episode aired, McGee went on to earn a master’s degree, start the acclaimed podcast “No One’s Listening,” host a talk radio show, and co-found a health education website. More recently, McGee wrote and starred in a stand-up comedy show titled “Me, Myself, and Irene.” In honor of the 25th anniversary of The Real World, she released an excerpt.
In this clip, the then-pregnant McGee tells a hilarious tale of going to a therapist for the first time. “It was late ’90s Poughkeepsie New York,” she says. “I found this therapist in the Yellow Pages. His last name started with an ‘A,’ and he took my insurance. That’s how people found doctors in the ’90s.”
Unfortunately, the therapist did not own a TV. “Now I have to explain to this guy what The Real World is,” McGee recalls. Naturally, this is what she tells him: “Well, it’s a true story about seven strangers … And they want to find out what happens when people stop being polite and start getting real.”
