Matt Campbell is getting a contract extension from Iowa State.

The school announced Campbell had signed a six-year extension Monday afternoon. Campbell, who has been at Iowa State since 2016, has been a hot name to move to a bigger job this offseason after Iowa State finished the regular season 7-5.

While the Cyclones ended the season on a slide, Campbell’s team beat Oklahoma and TCU, the two teams playing in Saturday’s Big 12 Championship Game.

“Matt and I agreed during the season to wait until after his last regular-season game to have these discussions,” Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard said. “Matt, [Matt’s wife] Erica, Ellen [Pollard’s wife] and I met last night at our house and had a wonderful discussion about what matters to their family, their staff and our program. It is awesome that we share common values about loyalty, hard work and family. I could not be more excited for our fans and our student-athletes to have someone like Matt leading our program. He stands behind what he says and I look forward to helping him fulfill his dream of making Iowa State football one of the best programs in the nation.”

The contract extension is worth $22.5 million and includes $1 million more for assistant coaches.

Campbell, 37, had a buyout that was approximately $9 million. Despite that hefty figure his name had been floated about as a possible coach who could take a job at a Power Five school with more heft than Iowa State. He was previously the coach at Toledo before joining the Cyclones.

After Iowa State got off to a hot start, ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit freaked out Iowa State fans by saying Campbell was going to head to another school. Campbell shot down Herbstreit’s opinion and said he was committed to the school.

He clearly is now.
