'Into the Forest' Sprouts a Suspenseful First Trailer With Ellen Page, Evan Rachel Wood

Between superhero collateral damage, alien invasions, vengeful demons, and more, it can feel like we’re on the eve of destruction almost every weekend at the multiplex. Well, don’t look to Into the Forest for refuge this summer. The July thriller’s first trailer (watch it above) from director Patricia Rozema (Mansfield Park, Kit Kittredge: An American Girl) makes it clear this film is not to be confused with Into the Woods. This one’s based on a 1996 novel by Jean Hegland about two sisters (Ellen Page and Evan Rachel Wood) left to survive in a broken world where electricity is gone, stores have been ransacked, and strangers pose a constant threat. This first look doesn’t address what catastrophe sent the world into this spiral, but we gather the siblings eventually seek refuge in the woods in order to cope with their increasingly dire situation.

While there’s little here that looks particularly novel—some of it appears eerily reminiscent of the terrain covered by this past January’s underwhelming The Fifth Wave—the presence of Page and Wood hopefully will help elevate Into the Forest into more than just this week’s end-of-the-world adventure. We’ll know soon enough how they fare: The film—co-starring Max Minghella, Callum Keith Rennie, Michael Eklund, and Sandy Sidhu—debuts exclusively on DirecTV on June 23, followed by a theatrical rollout on July 29.
