This Intense (and Dark) Psychological Thriller Starring Bruce Willis Just Hit #3 on Netflix

Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson and James McAvoy are only three of the big names attached to the psychological thriller that just hit number three on Netflix’s most-watched movies list (and the film sounds right up my alley).

Glass, which serves as a crossover and sequel to Unbreakable (2000) and Split (2016), follows security guard-turned-vigilante David Dunn (Willis), who faces off against “The Beast” (McAvoy), a man who possesses superhuman strength and 23 different personalities. They both end up in a psychiatric hospital, where they cross paths with a mysterious figure named Elijah Price/Mr. Glass (Jackson), who knows the secret behind their very existence.

The sequel first premiered in select Alamo Drafthouse Cinema theaters on January 12, 2019, and later debuted across America on January 19, 2019. And I’m sorry to say the film was met with, er, mixed reviews. According to Rotten Tomatoes, critics gave the movie 37 percent out of 100, but audiences gave a rating of 67 percent.

While some viewers found Glass to be quite underwhelming, the ensemble cast received praise for their powerful performances, especially McAvoy. And the film was a success in the box office, grossing $278 million worldwide despite having a $9 million budget (per Variety).

Back in January 2019, M. Night Shyamalan (who wrote and directed the Unbreakable trilogy) sat down with IndieWire and discussed a possible sequel to Glass. When asked about a follow-up film, Shyamalan said, “That’s not interesting to me. There’s no danger in that. Or not enough danger, let’s say that…For me, my weapon isn’t matching pyrotechnics against pyrotechnics. I’m just not good at it! I just can’t—Avengers and movies like that—I mean, I don’t even know how they do these things.”

Glass also stars Sarah Paulson (American Horror Story, Ratched), Anya Taylor-Joy (The Menu, The Queen’s Gambit), Luke Kirby (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Spencer Treat Clark (Gladiator) and Diana Silvers (Ma).
