Is Dune: Awakening an open-world survival MMO?

You'll need to sharpen your survival skills and rise to dominance to stay alive against thousands of other players in Dune: Awakening.

The MMO game "combines the grit and creativity of survival games with the social interactivity of a large, persistent multiplayer game to create a unique and ambitious Open World Survival MMO," according to duneawakening.com.

Players of Dune: Awakening can explore the epic landscapes of Arrakis from boundless, rolling dunes, ancient underground Ecology Labs and deep canyons where bandits seek easy prey.

In some areas, you will be able to have player vs. player combat. Other areas are kept safe by patrolling Sardaukar troops.

Will Dune: Awakening have a storyline?

Similar to other online open-world games, Dune: Awakening will allow players to play as seemingly unimportant characters who eventually become part of the power struggle on Arrakis.

While you may come across Paul Atreides, Chani and other characters in the films and books, the game is set in an alternate timeline from the source material.

Players will create a character and choose options along the way that will influence the gameplay. You can declare loyalty to certain factions and guilds by wearing certain clothes, specializing in skills known by specific groups and more.

From there, you'll explore the harsh beauty of Arrakis, learn to escape the deadly sandworms, uncover valuable resources, and build guilds and relationships with other players to gain control of the spice.

You can engage in epic third-person combat with everything from Holtzman gadgets to an array of ranged firearms. Learn to craft weapons, armor, tools and more along with creating an impenetrable fortress.

Don't get too comfortable with your landscape though.

To keep things interesting, beyond the Shield Wall, cataclysmic Coriolis storms will regularly alter the landscape. There will be new valuable resources and secrets to uncover. However, your outposts may be swept away, and you might find yourself lost in the dunes.
