Inside The MSG Sphere In Las Vegas: Darren Aronofsky Offers First Look At “Largest Screen On The Planet” In Action

In a preview of an experience we’ll all be likely hearing a lot about in coming months, Darren Aronofsky has posted the first video from inside The Sphere in Las Vegas, and it’s pretty impressive.

For those who don’t know, the Sphere is billed by Madison Square Garden Entertainment Corp., which built it, as a “next- generation entertainment medium,” with a screen the size of four football fields (called “a 160,000 sq. ft. LED media plane”) that wraps up, over, and around the audience and promises the highest resolution LED on earth. Oh, and there’s seating for about 17,000.

Aronofsky’s purpose-made film Postcard From Earth will debut on October 6, a little over a week after U2 opens the the venue.

Here’s how MSG describes the film and the experience: “Part sci-fi story, part nature documentary, Postcard From Earth takes you on a journey from the Antarctic, deep into the ocean, across…global locations and deep into space. You will see the world like never before. It is the first cinematic project specially commissioned for Sphere and takes advantage of all our experiential technologies, from the world’s largest high-definition screen that wraps over and around you to the haptic chairs that let you feel the movie to the 167,000 speakers that immerse you in sound.”

Writing on Instagram, Aronofsky called the project “incredibly rewarding…a love letter to mother earth” filmed on all seven continents. As for the eye-popping video he posted, he says, “my iphone can’t come close to capturing the definition on the screen. at times you forget where you are. Take a look at the link below.

“first look of the 18k, 60fps largest screen on the planet. featuring #postcardfromearth premiering october 6 only @spherevegas making a half-petabyte (500000 gb) experience, filming on every continent, a love letter to mother earth it has been incredibly rewarding. we are just finishing up the mix and it’s next level with 160000 speakers. postcard is a journey and i can’t wait to share it with you all. my iphone can’t come close to capturing the definition on the screen. at times you forget where you are and you’re transported to the other side of our home.”

Earlier this year, Aronofsky said, “I see Sphere as a great opportunity to pluck people from the bling and thrum of the Vegas strip in all its human constructed madness and immerse them as fully as possible in the wonder, awe, and beauty of the natural world. Postcard from Earth is a sci-fi journey deep into our future as our descendants reflect on our shared home.” Ticket prices range from $49-$199, depending on the day.

On September 29, U2 is set to spring into action, taking its multisensory stage show to another level with U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere. Prices for those shows are $400-$1495. Many early dates are already sold out.

Earlier this year, James Dolan’s Sphere Entertainment, which was spun off from MSG Entertainment in April, opened Sphere Studios, a Burbank facility for producers of immersive projects.

The space is dedicated to developing next-generation productions designed to be shown at its parent company’s Sphere venues.
