The eternally sexy rocker — who released his new album 'Blue Electric Light' on Friday, May 24 — celebrated turning 60 in Paris with a joint birthday and record release party

What better place than the City of Love for Lenny Kravitz to ring in a new decade?

On Friday, May 24, the Grammy-winning rocker — who dropped his highly anticipated album Blue Electric Light the same day — celebrated turning 60 with a star-studded birthday and record release party held at the iconic Hôtel de Crillon.

According to a source, Kravitz (whose birthday is May 26) kicked off the festivities with dinner followed by an after party, where DJ Ruckus spun tunes as guests danced the night away.

The icon had a "joyous evening surrounded by his closest family and friends," says the source, adding that speeches paid tribute to his late mom, actress Roxie Roker.

Loved ones in attendance included the star's ex-wife Lisa Bonet, their daughter Zoë Kravitz (her fiancé Channing Tatum is currently on location shooting a movie), Naomi Campbell, Salma Hayek and her husband François-Henri Pinault, Pauletta Washington and her son John David, Chris Rock, Laurence Fishburne, Colman Domingo and Marisa Tomei.

The star also had an extra-special guest in attendance, according to the source: his fourth grade teacher Mrs. Goldberg, who traveled to Paris from New York to join in the festivities.

Earlier this year, Kravitz sat down with PEOPLE for its Black History Month cover, in which he reflected on his barrier-breaking career.

"It's sort of amazing to me that I could be where I am now and feel fresh and hungry," he said of staying inspired.

Weeks later he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, where Zoë and his longtime friend Denzel Washington (who is also currently on location shooting a film) gave funny and heartfelt speeches about the musician.

"It's an incredible honor to be on this street. To be with all of these great people that have done incredible things with their lives is an honor," Kravitz told PEOPLE at the ceremony.

"I never thought about it. Like I said, when I was a kid, I was walking up and down these streets, but I was pretty much always thinking about where I was going to sleep that night," he continued. "To have it now just feels so surreal, and I'm really grateful."
