Inside the Japanese Restaurant Frequented by Meghan Markle, Joaquin Phoenix and More Stars

There are a plethora of sushi restaurants in Los Angeles, but Asanebo Japanese Gourmet has celebrities coming back time and time again.

The hot spot has garnered a loyal following since opening in 1991, including Hollywood and British royalty. On Thursday, Meghan Markle joined a friend for dinner at the beloved Los Angeles sushi spot.

The restaurant, which earned Michelin stars in 2008 and 2009, draws in customers with its no-frills interior design and extensive menu. The hot spot is spearheaded by chef-owner Tetsuya Nakaohas and offers omakase options or a-la-carte choices, including various Wagyu beef preparations, classic maki and a rotating selection of daily catch sashimi.

During Thursday's outing, Markle and Terry Wood, the executive producer of Oprah Winfrey's Harpo Productions and executive producer on Markle’s podcast Archetypes, dined at a corner table in the Studio City restaurant.

"Meghan was kind" during the evening, a source tells PEOPLE of her visit, adding that she was in a great mood and ordered plenty of sake.

Lady Gaga and Beyoncé have also visited the Japanese spot, according to the source. Not only is Joaquin Phoenix another regular, but he's also “a great tipper,” the source adds.

Its global appeal makes it all the more enticing for A-Listers. Per Asanebo Japanese Gourmet's Instagram, its selection of fresh fish is sourced domestically and internationally from places like Spain, New Zealand, Australia and Japan.

Asanebo is over 30 years old and was a karaoke bar during the early years. Now, the intimate restaurant opens its doors at 5 p.m. and closes at 10 p.m seven days a week.
