Anna Paquin made headlines on Wednesday when she arrived at the red carpet premiere of A Bit of Light rocking a cane (and a fashionable one, too, as it perfectly coordinated with her all-black ensemble).
New Zealand native Paquin, 41, told PEOPLE that working, especially with her "first love" of independent filmmaking, has helped her cope with her health issues, which remain undisclosed.
"That's how I entered the film industry," she said. "I was working with people who are all about telling stories and telling them with integrity and truth."
Paquin's film A Bit of Light had the bonus of being directed by her husband and former True Blood co-star Stephen Moyer. The Oscar winner called him her "favorite person to play with."
