“Inside Out 2” Trailer: Amy Poehler's Joy Meets a New Teenage Emotion — Anxiety, Voiced by Maya Hawke

The sequel is in theaters June 2024

Pixar is entering its teen years with a sequel to Inside Out.

On Thursday, the first trailer for Inside Out 2 debuted, teasing the sequel to the 2015 movie that starred Amy Poehler, Bill Hader, Mindy Kaling and an ensemble voice cast as various emotions inside a young girl's head.

Inside Out 2 sees Poehler, 52, return as Joy, as well as Phyllis Smith (Sadness) and Lewis Black (Anger) reprise their roles from the first movie. Tony Hale steps into the role of Fear for Hader, while Liza Lapira (Crazy Stupid Love) voices Disgust this time around instead of Kaling.

The sequel, set to release roughly nine years after the original film's debut, meets Joy (Poehler) and the rest of the emotions as they ponder a red alarm sounding inside Riley's mind.

Ozzy Osbourne's 1980 song "Crazy Train" plays as the alarm goes haywire and a wrecking crew of blue, purple and green-colored emotions arrive for what they describe as "demo day" and begin destroying Riley's mind.

After the demolition, the emotions find that their console has unexpectedly turned orange and find a new emotion — Anxiety (voiced by Maya Hawke) — has arrived in Riley's mind as she's grown older.

A synopsis for the movie says Inside Out 2 revisits Riley "just as headquarters is undergoing a sudden demolition to make room for something entirely unexpected: new Emotions!"

"Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust, who’ve long been running a successful operation by all accounts, aren’t sure how to feel when Anxiety shows up," the synopsis reads. "And it looks like she’s not alone."

Inside Out 2

Inside Out 2 is directed by Kelsey Mann, who makes his feature-length directorial debut with Pixar after working as a writer, short film director and creative consultant on the studio's films as far back as 2013.

Mann said in a statement that the sequel's new character Anxiety "might be new to the crew, but she’s not really the type to take a back seat."

“That makes a lot of sense if you think about it in terms of what goes on inside all our minds," Mann said.

Inside Out 2 is in theaters June 2024.
