‘It’s Infuriating That This Still Happens,’ Says Parkland Dad About School Shootings

Max Schachter says he feels sick to his stomach every time there is another school shooting. “When I hear about school shootings like the one at Oxford high school, it’s gut-wrenching,” says the national school safety advocate. Max’s youngest son, Alex, was one of 17 people murdered in the Parkland, Florida school shooting at Marjory Douglas Stoneman High School in 2018. He says he knows all too well what the parents of the four students killed on November 30, 2021, in Oxford, Michigan, are going through. “It’s infuriating that this still happens,” he says. Fifteen-year-old Ethan Crumbley, who was a student at Oxford, is being held without bail, charged with two dozen crimes, including first-degree murder and terrorism causing death. His parents, James and Jennifer Crumbley, are also facing four counts each of involuntary manslaughter for allegedly failing to prevent the attack by failing to meet their obligations as gun owners. Watch the video above to hear how Max responds when Dr. Phil asks him, “How do you feel about these parents being charged?” This episode, “Tragic School Shootings: Who is to Blame?” airs Monday. And later, Dr. Phil talks to Max’s older son, Ryan, a former student and survivor of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, who says every school shooting he hears about is a trigger for him.
