Indie Flashback! Winona Ryder, Bridget Fonda, and More at the 1995 Independent Spirit Awards

If the Academy Awards tends to honor Hollywood's past, then the Film Independent Spirit Awards celebrates the future. Now a 31-year tradition, the awards show — which is held on the day before the Oscars ceremony — honors the best movies produced outside of the studio system and often introduces the world to some of the biggest up-and-coming names in filmmaking. The 1995 show honored such fresh faces as Quentin Tarantino for 'Pulp Fiction,' David O. Russell for 'Spanking the Monkey,' Kevin Smith for 'Clerks,' and Ang Lee for 'Eat Drink Man Woman.' Click through to see who showed off their dressed-down, indie spirit at the ceremony on March 25, 1995 in Santa Monica, CA. Once you've got your blast from the past, go here on Saturday, Feb. 21, at 2 p.m. to catch Yahoo's livestream of the Spirit Awards red-carpet arrivals.
