Indians pitcher Carlos Carrasco has had terrible luck with comebackers
Cleveland Indians right-hander Carlos Carrasco has had some terrible luck with line drive comebackers over the years. Unfortunately, his poor luck continued Saturday when he was struck — again — by a liner off the bat of Minnesota Twins first baseman Joe Mauer.

The rocket, which was recorded at 99.6 mph, struck Carrasco on the right forearm.
Carrasco was clearly in pain as he crumpled to one knee. He was equally frustrated. The team later announced Carrasco suffered a contusion and was headed to the hospital for X-Rays. Fortunately, those turned out negative. While his luck was bad, it obviously could have been worse. He was placed on the 10-day disabled list Sunday.
Carrasco was off to a rough start in Saturday’s game. He allowed four first-inning runs and was injured one out into the second inning. He took the loss as Cleveland fell 9-3.
Carlos Carrasco’s previous bad luck on comebackers
It wasn’t the first time Carrasco’s been struck by a comebacker during his MLB career. It wasn’t the second time either. It’s actually the third time Carrasco has taken a direct hit, with all three coming over the last four seasons.
In 2016, Carrasco’s season abruptly ended on a line drive off the bat of Ian Kinsler. Carrasco was diagnosed with a non-displaced fracture of the fifth metacarpal in his pitching hand. The timing couldn’t have been any worse. The Indians were two weeks away from the postseason. A postseason where they’d ultimately lose three World Series-clinching games to the Chicago Cubs.
Having a healthy Carrasco available for any of them definitely would have helped.
One year prior, Carrasco took a Melky Cabrera line drive off the face during a start against the Chicago White Sox.
Carrasco walked away from that incident with a jaw contusion.
Sometime we forget how dangerous it can be for pitchers when the stand 60-feet, six-inches from home plate. Carrasco knows that danger all too well. Here’s hoping he’ll bounce back quickly and put his tough luck behind him.
