Kwazar Martin, an Indianapolis-based street artist known for his colorful graffiti art, has started work on his next piece that will accompany the already completed murals of Indiana Pacers point guard Tyrese Haliburton and Indiana Fever no. 1 draft pick Caitlin Clark.

Now, Kwazar will add an Indianapolis Colts player – quarterback Anthony Richardson. Fitting as it may be, the wall resembles a football coach's whiteboard. Only the coach forgot to erase one play before drawing their next - over and over.

Kwazar said the markings are called a scribble grid. They're something he adds to each wall before he paints. To some, it may appear as if a toddler was cut loose with a spray can, but in reality the rows of squares, triangles, and Xs and Os guide him. He says it gives him perspective, something mural artists need when painting large human figures up close.

Indianapolis street artist Michael 'Kwazar' Martin talks about his style and subject choices Thursday, May 2, 2024, for his next mural – Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson. Kwazar says the background will be a similar grey, with lots of pops of color wording and symbols mixed in so the whole wall feels cohesive.

"So what I do is take a picture of the markings, then I put that picture on top of it my mural image," he said. "The markings navigate me to where the eyes, the mouth, or the nose is located."

Richardson's mural will be painted in a similar style as Haliburton's and Clark's, with a grey background and bright and colorful wording and symbols. The size will be similar, too, at 20 feet wide and 15 feet high.

Now that the NFL Draft is in the books and the season nears closer, Kwazar hopes Richardson's mural will add to the building energy that seems to exist currently in Indianapolis and around the state.

IndyStar will continue to follow the progress of the new mural which will be a work in progress over the next few weeks.

Visit the murals yourself: The new murals can be seen from 16th Street on the west side of Indianapolis, between Lafayette Road and Riverside Drive looking north toward 17th Street.
