Indianapolis Children's Museum offering free admission for Fiesta de la Familia

The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis will observe National Hispanic Heritage Month on Sept. 24 with free admission and a celebration of Latin American culture.

During the day, the museum, 3000 N. Meridian St., will host the fourth annual Fiesta de la Familia, with live performances and activities highlighting folk art from different Latin American countries.

Visitors also can receive flu shots and get a chance to win money for college.

The special programming takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Festival program

  • Mexican Paper Flower Fiesta with the Girl Scouts of Central Indiana: Create a traditional paper flower.

  • Puerto Rican Vejigantes Masks: Color a folkloric mask.

  • Columbian Mochilas: Take inspiration from traditional mochilas to decorate a bag.

  • Family Photos: Decorate a photo cube and celebrate the day with a family photo.

  • Guatemalan Worry Dolls: Create a doll to help remove worries.

  • 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. - Zelaya Mariachi Band (live music)

  • 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. - El Marimbaso (live music)

  • 1 p.m. - Story Time: Author María Rosana Mestre will read her book “Carlota Shares Her Secret”/”Carlota Cuenta su Secreto.”

  • 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. - Author Book Signing: Author of “Hoosier Latinos: A Century of Struggle, Service and Success” Nicole Martinez-LeGrand.

  • 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. - Community Partners: Global Preparatory Academy, Indiana Commission for Higher Education and Christ Church Cathedral.

  • 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. - Indiana University School of Medicine Medical Spanish Student Interest Group

Flu shots available

During the festival, Riley Children’s Health medical professionals will administer flu vaccinations to healthy children, 6 months and older, and adults who confirm they do not have any signs of illness or other medical conditions.

Win money for college

Adults can scan a QR code on CollegeChoice 529 signs placed throughout the building for a chance to win one of four $250 account deposits into a new or existing CollegeChoice 529 Savings Plan account. Paper entries will also be available on-site, and winners will be contacted the following week.
