'Incredibles 2' deleted scene reveals scrapped A.I. plot, finds heroes battling out-of-control technology (exclusive)

Audiences definitely thought Incredibles 2 was worth the 14-year wait, as Brad Bird’s sequel to his 2004 animated Pixar hit earned an astounding $607 million at the domestic box office (and $1.2 billion globally), making it third highest-grossing release of 2018. That means demand for the film on home video should be high. And to whet fans’ appetites, we now have an exclusive clip from its upcoming home release that hints at the film’s original, ultimately rejected, storyline.

The above clip is a behind-the-scenes look at the development of a deleted scene dubbed “Security Breakdown” in which Bob Parr (Craig T. Nelson), aka Mr. Incredible, must contend with the advanced home security system of Edna Mode (Bird). The reason for this perilous situation has to do with Edna’s out-of-control artificial-intelligence technology, which as Bird explains, was part of a larger A.I.-centric theme that was present in early versions of the script.

Those narrative plans were eventually scrapped, and now only live on in this featurette, which uses voice work from Nelson and Bird, as well as CGI, to help animate its storyboard drawings. The result is a peek at one of the many movie moments that might have been, although Bird admits that he isn’t particularly sad about losing this sequence, saying, “I’m happy that we went the direction we did with E instead of this, even though this has some cool stuff in it.”

Incredibles 2 arrives Oct. 23 on digital HD, and Nov. 6 on Blu-ray and DVD.
