Ina Garten Explains Why She Chose Not to Have Children Throughout Her Almost 50-Year Marriage

Ina Garten says not having a child with her husband of 48 years, Jeffrey, was a deliberate choice.

The 69-year-old Food Network star opened up about their relationship during her recent appearance on the Katie Couric Podcast, including the reason they decided to not have children.

"I really appreciate that other people do, and we will always have friends that have children that we are close to, but it was a choice I made very early," Garten says. "I really felt -- I feel -- that I would have never been able to have the life I've had. And so it's a choice, and that was the choice I made."

Garten, 67, says the two were never judged by others for the decision. However, there is one thing she admits she missed out on.

"I think the one thing that we miss is a lot of people's friends are the parents of their kids' friends," she notes. "So, we never had that connection with other people that I see a lot of, that network. But no, I never felt judged by it -- maybe people did, but I didn't notice."

Garten also shares the secret to their long-lasting marriage. The two met when she was just 16, when she visited her brother at Dartmouth, and have been married since 1968.

"The secret is that you just take care of each other, and admire each other, and support each other, and you get that back," she explains.

And off course, Jeffrey, a professor at Yale, also knows how to compromise!

"If Jeffrey and I disagree on something, he always agrees with me," she jokes.
