Impulso Morelia Showcases Movies by Marcelo Tobar, Everardo Gonzalez, Maya Goded
A mix of 13 new and veteran filmmakers will vie for backing at Impulso Morelia, the 14th Morelia Int’l Film Festival’s works-in-progress showcase running October 25-27. Now on its second year, the invitation-only sneak preview lures buyers, sales agents, distributors, producers and film programmers.
Launched in 2015, the initiative coordinated by Andrea Stavenhagen will include projects in early development for the first time this year. “It’s important to note the fortunate participation of more women, either as filmmakers or producers,” said Stavenhagen.
This year’s jury is comprised of Spain’s Antonio Saura of int’l sales agency Latido Films, producer Lisa Marie Russo of Fly Film, and World Cinema Fund project manager Vincenzo Bugno who will decide on the winners of prizes that include cash, distribution deals, post=production services, p & a and/or berths in A-list film festivals.
Fiction projects in post includes “Oso polar,” the third feature of Marcelo Tobar(“Asteroide”) who presents a low-budget, experimental project shot on a couple of cell phones. Award-winning docu filmmaker Everardo Gonzaelez(“El Paso”) seeks post-production services for his latest docu feature “La libertad del diablo,” a searing psychological portrait of sicarios (hired assassins) and their victims.
Maya Goded, whose “Plaza de la Soledad” won guaranteed distribution in Mexico from Cinepolis last year, with a p &a valued at 250,000 pesos ($13,000) and the chance to compete at the World Documentary section of the Sundance Film Festival, returns to Impulso Morelia with a docu in development, “Encuentro en Juarez.” Unlike her previous docu which dealt with the human realities of prostitution, “Encuentro en Juarez” follows a Mexican actor and a Dutch playwright as they work on staging a play. Nicolas and Sebastian Celis’ Pimienta Films, which produced Tatiana Huezo’s prize-winning docu last year “Tempestad” and Jonas Cuaron’s “Desierto,” Mexico’s entry to the 2016 Foreign-Language Oscar competition, returns with the second docu by Marta Ferrer, “Morir a los desiertos.” Newcomer Marta Hernaiz presents “La caotica vida de nada,” in post, about a single mom of an autistic child who travels through the Balkans to reconcile with the past and accept her new reality.
