Rachel Maddow brought to tears when reading report on Immigrant babies entering 'tender age' shelters

While there is plenty of discussion around the Trump administration’s choice to separate parents from their children at the border, it appears that the circumstances weigh heavy on even newscasters.

Rachel Maddow was brought to tears and had to end her show, The Rachel Maddow Show, early while reporting about “tender age” shelters in Texas.

The Associated Press reports that babies and young children are being sent to “tender age” shelters and being separated from their parents in South Texas.

The White House originally announced its zero-tolerance policy in early May, and over 2,300 children have since been taken from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Maddow began to report on the issue, but it wasn’t long before her emotions took hold. The reporter posted on Twitter, shortly after the show, to apologize and to tweet out the story she was unable to get through.

This is the statement she was trying to read on camera: “Trump administration officials have been sending babies and other young children forcibly separated from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border to at least three ‘tender age’ shelters in South Texas … Lawyers and medical providers who have visited the Rio Grande Valley shelters described playrooms of crying preschool-age children in crisis.”

The Associated Press spoke to both lawyers and medical providers who have visited the shelters. These professionals report rooms with crying children younger than 5 years old.

Kay Bellor, the vice president for programs at Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, a program that provides foster care and child welfare services to migrant children, said, “The thought that they are going to be putting such little kids in an institutional setting? I mean it is hard for me to even wrap my mind around it. Toddlers are being detained.”

In Houston, the fourth shelter for young immigrant children is planned to open.
