Illinois drive-in theater named the best in the U.S.

BELLEVILLE, Ill. – One local drive-in theater was selected as the best in the country by USA Today.

It was announced Wednesday that Skyview Drive-In in Belleville, Ill., was the best of its kind.

The space opened July 8, 1949. Since then, the location has held movies, live music, and more.

“To say we’re thankful for the incredible support throughout the contest voting would be an understatement,” Skyview’s Facebook post of the announcement said. “What an incredible honor, and during our 75th anniversary season, no less.”

Skyview was chosen as a nominee by an expert panel and then selected as the winner through public voting. The Belleville location topped others in California, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and more. Another Illinois drive-in, Harvest Moon Twin Drive-in Theatre, located north of Champaign, came in second place.

According to USA Today, there are less than 400 drive-in theaters still in operation today. When they were at their peak, there were over 4,000 venues stretching across the states.

Skyview Drive-In is officially on its summer schedule, open Thursday through Monday. Thursdays will show captioned movies. In addition, Thursdays are bargain nights, where tickets are reduced to $10 and children under 12 are free.
