Idiocracy is coming true, says screenwriter

Don’t expect to buy Brawndo energy drinks any time soon, but one of the writers behind Idiocracy believes his film has come to reflect society more than he ever expected.

Screenwriter Etan Cohen, who wrote the 2006 film along with its director Mike Judge, said on his Twitter that he “never expected Idiocracy to become a documentary.” Lamenting the current state of the world in response to a reply to his tweet, Cohen joked, “I thought the worst thing that would come true was everyone wearing Crocs.”

His comments of course come during the 2016 presidential election, but Cohen does not go into detail about whether he’s referring to the current slate of presidential hopefuls or other issues he sees plaguing society.

Idiocracy depicts a world 500 years in the future where intelligence has regressed and only the incredibly dimwitted have survived. Luke Wilson’s Joe Bauers and Maya Rudolph’s Rita, put in cryogenic sleep during modern times, wake up in this post-intelligence future, discovering a world that lacks reason and thoughtful discussion. T he world has become a desolate wasteland of the mind, ruled more by brands than individual thinking. As the film’s narrator laments, “Some had high hopes the genetic engineering would correct this trend in evolution, but sadly the greatest minds and resources where focused on conquering hair loss and prolonging erections.”

Cohen isn’t alone in thinking the world is turning into an Idiocracy, as Terry Crews, who starred as President Camacho in the film, tweeted out that even his character would tell the country to “CHILL THE F OUT, ‘MERICA.”

So while capital punishment is not yet carried out by monster truck demolition derby, the film’s screenwriter certainly sees signs of his and Judge’s work coming to life in the world around him.
