Idina Menzel joins Kyle Meredith to talk about Drama Queen, her first album of new material since her 2016 self-titled LP.

The Broadway legend, who’s also starring in Netflix’s You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah with Adam Sandler, talks about wanting to a make a disco-inspired record and looking towards Barbra Streisand, Donna Summer, and Cher for inspiration. She also touches on working with Nile Rodgers and Jake Shears, as well as her forthcoming nature that her songwriting partners appreciate.

Menzel also reveals the stories behind “Make Me Hate Me,” “Move,” and “Beast,” and why it was important for her to reclaim and reframe what it means to be a drama queen.

“It’s called Drama Queen because I think that that word is looked at as a negative word, and I wanted to reframe it, reclaim it,” she explains. “Because, why do we have to apologize for being someone that has really big, intense emotions? Doesn’t that make us more interesting?”
