Idina Menzel and Aaron Lohr’s Relationship Timeline: From Costars to Husband and Wife

A happy ending! Idina Menzel and husband Aaron Lohr were costars more than a decade before they exchanged wedding vows. The two performers met filming the 2005 movie adaptation of the musical Rent. That same year, they both appeared in the off-Broadway musical See What I Wanna See. When their paths first crossed, Menzel was still married to her ex-husband, Taye Diggs, with whom she shares son Walker, born in 2009. The coparents separated in 2013 after 10 years of marriage and finalized their divorce the following year. Post-split, the Frozen star said she was “open” to dating again but cited her busy schedule as an obstacle. “I just don’t have a lot of time,” she told Redbook for its December 2014 issue, during her stint in the Broadway musical If/Then. “They’d have to meet me at, like, midnight after the show, and that’s kind of slutty, isn’t it?” Despite the Tony winner’s skepticism about having the bandwidth for a relationship, she and Lohr made their first red carpet appearance as a couple in April 2015 at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner. That August, the Los Angeles Times reported that the duo had purchased a home in Encino, California, together. Although Menzel and Lohr largely kept their relationship out of the spotlight, the Uncut Gems actress shared the news of their September 2016 engagement via Twitter while promoting her self-titled album, Idina. “What an incredible week. Thank you to everyone for all your support with the album,” she wrote at the time. “As if this week couldn’t get any better, I have wonderful news … my man and I are engaged! We are so happy. It’s a beautiful time.” One year later, the lovebirds secretly tied the knot in an intimate backyard ceremony. “Wanted to let you know … married the love of my life #aaronlohr this weekend @ our home,” the Wicked star tweeted several days after the nuptials. “Dad & son walked me down [the] aisle. It was magical.” Menzel shared several snaps from the special day in subsequent tweets. “Thank you to everyone who helped make my wedding day so special,” she wrote alongside a photo of her and the Newsies actor. Two years later, the Enchanted actress was still gushing about her husband. At the November 2019 premiere of Frozen II, she told Access Hollywood that if she could freeze any era from her life, she would pick the present. “I’m remarried to the man of my dreams,” she said.
