Hip-Hop is a genre built upon many things; self-confidence being one of them. Ice-T took the time to give himself flowers this weekend when XXL asked what the most iconic opening rap line ever is.

The long-running platform posed the question on Saturday (Nov. 18) via X, formerly known as Twitter, and got thousands of replies. Users named lines from JAY-Z’s “99 Problems,” LL Cool J’s “Mama Said Knock You Out,” 50 Cent’s “In Da Club,” and Young M.A’s “Ooouuu,” among several other important rap records over the genre’s 50-year history.

The Law & Order: Special Victims Unit actor quoted the tweet and wrote, “6 n the Morning Police at my door….,” which is the opening line from his 1986 record “6 ‘N the Mornin’.” The track appeared on his 1987 debut album, Rhyme Pays, and helped launch his career as one of the forefathers gangsta rap. Check out his tweet as well as some of the replies to XXL’s original question below.

While Ice-T took this opportunity to big up himself, he showed love to the late Mobb Deep member Prodigy last month.

“Pic of me and @PRODIGYMOBBDEEP,” he wrote in an Instagram caption accompanying a photo of the two rappers together. “I’ve said many times that he was my Favorite MC/Rapper.. This was at a Concert we rocked in Vegas.. He passed away that same night.. Life is fragile and precious. Appreciate every min.”

In 2017, they were part of The Art Of Rap tour along with Ghostface Killah, Onyx, KRS-One, and Havoc, the other half of Mobb Deep. Prodigy battled sickle cell disease throughout his life and was hospitalized due to complications with sickle cell-anemia on the evening he and Ice-T took the photo below. He passed away at Spring Valley Medical Center in Las Vegas.
