Breakthrough rapper Ice Spice will win the MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist. That’s according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users as of this writing. Is that good news for her Grammy hopes?

Ice Spice gets leading odds of 11/2 with support from 20 of our Top 24 Users who got the highest scores predicting last year’s VMAs and 22 of the All-Star Top 24 who got the highest scores when you combine the last two years’ VMA results. Surprisingly, she only has one other nomination this year, for Push Performance of the Year for “Princess Diana,” but unlike the VMA nominations, the winners will be decided by fans voting from home, and there’s good reason to believe Spice has an advantage with music fans.

SEEVMAs rematch between Beyonce and Taylor Swift: Who will win Artist of the Year? Stay out of it, Kanye!

Just in 2023 she has achieved four top-10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100: “Boys a Liar, Pt. 2” with fellow VMA nominee PinkPantheress, “Princess Diana” with Nicki Minaj, “Barbie World” also with Nicki Minaj and “Karma” with Taylor Swift. No one else in the category has had that many high-charting hits, though Peso Pluma has her beat in terms of songs that have charted on the Hot 100 overall. But if Ice Spice does win here with fans, does that clear her path to the Grammys?

The VMAs are a mixed bag when it comes to anticipating the Grammy for Best New Artist. In the past 10 years most of the VMA winners weren’t even nominated for the corresponding Grammy: Austin Mahone (2013), Fifth Harmony (2014), Fetty Wap (2015), DNCE (2016), Cardi B (2018) and Dove Cameron (2022). Two other VMA champs were nominated for but did not win the Grammy: Khalid (2017) and Doja Cat (2020). Only twice in the last decade have the VMAs and Grammys agreed: Billie Eilish (2019) and Olivia Rodrigo (2021). Eilish and Rodrigo were pretty recent, though, so perhaps that’s a good sign for Ice Spice when the recording academy selects their favorite newcomer.
