Ian Ziering is showing his support for his former Beverly Hills, 90210 costar Tori Spelling after she filed for divorce from husband Dean McDermott.

The 59-year-old actor tells PEOPLE at the Los Angeles Mission Easter event on Friday that the cast of the hit teen drama series are still “like family.”

“We support each other through life's ups and downs after the show, we still care about each other,” he shares. “So whenever there's a victory, we all pull together and lend support and pride, and when there's challenging times, we come together and offer whatever support we can from wherever we are.”

Ziering’s comments come after Spelling, 50, filed for divorce from McDermott on Friday after 18 years of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason behind their split. The date of separation was listed as June 17, 2023.

On the same day Spelling listed as their date of separation, McDermott, 57, announced that the couple had decided to go their separate ways in a statement that was later deleted off his Instagram.

“It’s with great sadness and a very very heavy heart that after 18 years together and 5 amazing children, that @torispelling and I have decided to go our separate ways, and start a new journey of our own,” he wrote at the time.

Speaking to PEOPLE, Ziering also opens up about the importance of using his celebrity for good while serving food at the Los Angeles Mission, which is among the largest providers of services to homeless people in the country. The organization offers hot meals and essential items to the men, women, and children residing in Skid Row.

“I look at the celebrity that I've earned as capital and I think this is a good way to spend that capital if I could help raise awareness towards what's possible for people to donate their time to help others that perhaps are less fortunate,” he shares. “First and foremost, I think that that's a good thing to do. That serves my heart [and[ also with my kids, it's a teachable moment where I can give them perspective.”
