Ian Somerhalder admits he isn't quite as good of a singer as his wife Nikki Reed, but that doesn't stop him from belting out tunes.

"I sing through life," he tells PEOPLE in this week's issue.

Somerhalder, 44, just returned from Scotland with his Vampire Diaries costar Paul Wesley where they were promoting their Brothers Bond bourbon — and even there "we just belted out songs," the actor says.

"Or I was singing in his ear, and his eyes were crossing," he adds.

Last perfect day off
Just walking around my farm with my family, feeding the animals. We have goats, chickens, horses and cows. Those are the days you realize are meaningful.

Last impulse buy
I had a replica of a General McClellan saddle made. I used to do Civil War reenactments when I was a kid because I was obsessed with understanding how the country fell apart. At some point I can give it to my kids.

Last thing I learned about myself
To make sure to take time for my body and soul. You have to be stronger than your excuses. Even if it’s just going for a walk in the morning. Just start.

Last time I was injured
I was in the gym, and I sneezed and dropped this 20-lb. dumbbell on my foot. I screamed so loud the woman next to me freaked out.
