EXCLUSIVE: Independent Artist Group has signed Troy Kotsur, the actor-director best known for his historic Oscar win, as part of Apple TV+’s drama, CODA.

With his Supporting Actor win for the film written and directed by Sian Heder, Kotsur became the first Deaf male to win an acting award on Hollywood’s biggest night. A film of major consequence, with regard to representation of the deaf community on screen, CODA adapted the French film La Famille Bélier to tell the story of Ruby (Emilia Jones), a CODA (or “child of deaf adult”) who serves as an interpreter for the members of her Boston family.

Kotsur memorably portrayed Ruby’s irreverent father Frank, a fisherman initially unsupportive of his daughter’s decision to pursue an education in music, who comes around in the end. The actor swept the ’21-’22 awards season with additional Best Supporting Actor wins at the BAFTA, SAG, Independent Spirit, Critics’ Choice and Gotham Awards.

Soon to be seen in the final season of Larry David’s Curb Your Enthusiasm, Kotsur also made headlines in 2019, when in addition to acting on The Mandalorian, he created an adapted form of sign language for fellow Star Wars series The Book of Baba Fett.

Troy’s success in film and television is built on a foundation of stage work that’s seen him play multiple roles in the Tony Award-winning run of Big River on Broadway, also appearing in LA Drama Critics Circle Award nominee Spring Awakening, and more.

The actor segued into directing in 2013 with the family feature No Ordinary Hero, emerging from his passion for inspiring deaf children. More recently, he produced and appeared in docu short To My Father, paying tribute to his late father, to whom he also dedicated his Oscar, which premiered at the Tribeca Festival.

Kotsur continues to be represented by Metric Talent Management and Ziffren Brittenham.
