Hurricane Ian has impacted flights at South Florida airports. Here’s what to know
Hurricane Ian has affected the plans of some travelers as dozens of flights were canceled or delayed at Florida airports
Here’s what you should know.
Miami International Airport
Communications director Greg Chin said that 38 arrivals and 31 departures have been canceled at MIA so far Thursday due to Hurricane Ian and recommended that travelers confirm with their airline that their flight is on time before coming to the airport.
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is fully open and operational, spokesperson Arlene Satchell said. The flight impacts “are mostly due to bad weather over parts of the U.S. and Caribbean associated with the effects of Hurricane Ian,” she said.
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport anticipates 275 arrival and 275 departure flights, she said. Of those flights, the airport expects 61 flight cancellations, which include 22 arrivals and 39 departures. There are 62 expected flight delays and 21 of the delays are arrivals while 41 are delayed departures.
American Airlines
American Airlines spokesperson Amy Lawrence said for the most current updates on travel advisories, American Airlines passengers can check www.aa.com/travelalerts.
“As the storm moves north to the Carolinas and Georgia, for anyone flying through there or with flights connecting in Miami, those travel advisories are in effect through October 3,” she said.
Spirit Airlines
Spirit Airlines spokesman Erik Hofmeyer said that Spirit will continue to operate flights to and from Miami International and Fort Lauderdale as well as Fort Myers, FL (RSW), Orlando, FL (MCO) and Tampa, FL (TPA). Modification charges for tickets will be waived from Sept. 27 through Sept. 30. Charges will still be waived after Oct. 3, but passengers may have to pay a fare difference.
