Hunter Schafer and Rosalía Are Just Getting Smoothies as Friends, But They Did Date Once

Hunter Schafer confirmed that she and Rosalía did date for a few months in 2019 and remain good friends in a new interview with GQ.
Schafer was at first reticent to speak on the record about the relationship. While discussing her public romance with Dominic Fike, she acknowledged that she had previously dated other famous people, “but people didn’t know about it. It was completely different.” When asked who, Schaffer said only, “People who care enough and have done their research probably know what’s up.”

In a follow-up interview, however, Schafer said she spoke with Rosalía and got the OK to discuss their brief time together — about five months in late 2019. Schaffer even admitted she wasn’t sure if they were actually going on dates at first.
“I have really beautiful friendships with people that I was once romantically involved with,” Schaffer said, adding that the Spanish musician is “family no matter what.”
Of the tabloid attention and numerous rumors they’ve garnered — especially as they continue to be seen in public together, getting smoothies or shopping for couches — Schaffer said, “It’s been so much speculation for so long. Part of us just wants to get it over with, and then another part is like, ‘It’s none of anybody’s fucking business!’ ”
She continued, “It’s something I’m happy to share. And I think she feels that way too.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Schafer offered absolutely zero clues about Euphoria Season Three, which was just delayed as creator Sam Levinson continues to write the scripts. One tidbit that’s been floating around is that the next season will feature a time jump, about which Schaffer said, “I can confirm that I have also seen that rumor in the news.”
The actress also discussed some of the choices she’s made as she continues to build her acting career (she appears in the new horror film Cuckoo, has a small part in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Kinds of Kindness, and will co-star alongside Michaela Coel and Anne Hathaway in Mother Mary). Part of her process has been rooted in her desire not to be typecast in parts for trans people: “I’ve gotten offered tons of trans roles, and I just don’t want to do it,” she said. “I don’t want to talk about it.”
While acknowledging this choice is a “privilege,” it’s part of a larger effort not let her gender identity define her so solidly — an understandable response to her extremely public-facing role as a 17-year-old plaintiff fighting North Carolina’s bathroom bill in 2016.
“I know for a fact that I’m one of the most famous trans people in media right now, and I do feel a sense of responsibility, and maybe a little bit of guilt, for not being more of a spokesperson,” she said. “But ultimately, I really do believe that not making it the centerpiece to what I’m doing will allow me to get further. And I think getting further and doing awesome shit, in the interest of ‘the movement,’ will be way more helpful than talking about it all the time.”
