Hunter Schafer Opens Up About Her Dating Life and Playing Trans Roles

After years of speculation, Hunter Schafer has finally confirmed that she and Spanish pop star Rosalía dated in 2019.

The actor opened up about her dating life in a recent, long-ranging profile with GQ, including a discussion of her breakup with Euphoria co-star Dominic Fike, who was the first man she ever dated. Schafer told the magazine that her relationship with Fike allowed her to “work through a lot of the feelings of disdain that I had towards men as a whole.”

“I think it had inhibited a lot of my friendships with men, and a lot of that came down as well,” she told GQ. “I had a really beautiful relationship with [Fike], and it really opened me up in that way.”

In the interview, Schafer said that Fike was the first famous person that she dated publicly, but added a caveat that she had dated other famous people before outside the public eye, so it was “completely different.” Though the interviewer tried to press on who Schafer might have been referring to, she hesitated to talk about it. But the following day, Schafer confirmed that she and Rosalía dated for roughly five months in the latter half of 2019, specifying that it “took her a few hangs to suss out the vibe and determine that they were, in fact, going on dates.” (We’ve all been there, girl!)

Nowadays, the two remain friends, with Schafer calling Rosalía “family no matter what.” “It’s been so much speculation for so long,” the actor told GQ. “Part of us just wants to get it over with, and then another part is like, ’It’s none of anybody’s fucking business!’” But at the end of the day, Schafer told the magazine that her relationship with the singer is “something I’m happy to share. And I think she feels that way, too.”

Though Schafer is currently single, she’s not quite ready to get out there again. She told GQ she’s “still in some ways healing from the last thing.” “I want to make sure I’m good all the way before I jump into something else,” she said.

According to *Variety*, HBO and showrunner Sam Levinson have not seen eye-to-eye on scripts, and the streamer even considered booting Levinson entirely.

Elsewhere in the profile, the actor spoke about her relationship to her transness, from her early days as a youth activist to her currently fraught relationship with identity politics. As a child, drawing was her “one big love creatively,” and a way for her to explore her feelings about her gender by creating female characters. Schafer told the magazine that her illustration skills were “a way to externalize what I didn’t feel I could externalize with myself.”

“I was a trans kid who didn’t transition until I was in high school. I had this whole world and person inside of me that couldn’t come out in the way it was supposed to,” she said. “I think I really needed it as a tool.”

Currently, Schafer is working to decenter her transness in her work and her public persona, a choice she calls a “privilege.” She’s even been offered “tons of trans roles,” but said, “I just don’t want to do it. I don’t want to talk about it.” But her resistance to being pigeonholed doesn’t mean that she’s uninterested in trans art as a whole. Speaking to the experience of directing a video for Anohni and the Johnsons, Schafer said, “When I look at other trans people’s art, there’s this frequency, this kind of common thread — whether it’s a sound or an aesthetic — that’s consistent.”

“I think it’s probably yielded from the shared experience that we all have that’s very unique,” she told GQ. “There’s something really spiritual about it, and kind of magical. And of course it sucks, but I also wouldn’t have it any other way.”
