Hunter Schafer Is 'Honored' “Zelda” Fans Are Thinking of Her for Live-Action Film: 'That Would Be So Cool'

After Nintendo confirmed it's adapting 'The Legend of Zelda' into a live-action movie, some fans want Schafer to play the game's title character

At the Los Angeles premiere of The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes on Monday, Schafer, 24, responded to those persistent Legend of Zelda video game fans who would like the Euphoria actor to play the game's title character in Nintendo's recently announced live-action film adaptation.

"I mean, yeah, obviously, that would be so cool," Schafer told Entertainment Tonight, when asked if the role is something she is interested in taking on. "I've seen — it's another wave of the fan casts and everything, which is real sweet. I'm honored that they even think of me for that."

Schafer previously told Variety at last week's Hunger Games premiere in London that she has been a fan of the video game series since she was a child. The Legend of Zelda, which was first released by Nintendo in 1986, will be directed by Wes Ball, who's known for his work on the Maze Runner trilogy and the upcoming movie Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

Nintendo announced that the movie is in development as a live-action film last Tuesday, as legendary video game designer and representative director Shigeru Miyamoto shared in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) that he and film producer Avi Arad have been developing the movie "for many years now."

"We have now officially started the development of the film with Nintendo itself heavily involved in the production," he wrote in that post. "It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it,"

Created by Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka, The Legend of Zelda game franchise centers on an elf-like warrior named Link and Princess Zelda as they battle to save their kingdom and vanquish the evil warlord Ganon. The film's announcement came roughly seven months after Nintendo's success with The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which made over $1 billion worldwide and is the second-highest grossing movie of the year in the United States and globally, after Barbie.

Schafer is not the only actor whose name has been thrown in the hat to play one of Legend of Zelda's lead characters. Machine Gun Kelly, a noted fan of the Zelda games, shared in an Instagram Story last Tuesday that he would like to portray Link.

"if I don't play Link we have a problem," he wrote in a post that has since expired from the platform.

For now, Schafer stars in the new Hunger Games prequel film as Tigris, a character fans first met in 2015's Mockingjay: Part Two, when she was played by Eugenie Bondurant.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is in theaters Friday.
