Hunter Schafer on ‘Euphoria’ Season 3 Delay and Her ‘One Scene’ in Yorgos Lanthimos’ ‘Kinds of Kindness’: ‘Wild Day of Filming’

Hunter Schafer is eagerly awaiting the day when she and her “Euphoria” co-stars reunite for the hit HBO series’ third season.
“I just really miss everybody. Everyone is doing very well in their careers right now,” Schafer told Variety on the purple carpet at the GQ Global Creativity Awards Thursday evening. “Everyone’s kind of blown up, and so with that comes people traveling a lot. Whatever happens, I’m just excited to get back together once it’s time and catch up and hang out.”

“Euphoria” Season 3, which was set to begin production later this spring, has been delayed indefinitely due to the Hollywood strikes and the death of Angus Cloud (who played Fez), among other factors. Sources told Variety that multiple visions were pitched for the drama’s next chapter, including creator Sam Levinson proposing a time jump five years into the future.
If a time jump were to occur following Season 2, Schafer hopes that her character Jules has simply “gotten a break” in the downtime.
“The past two seasons have been pretty rough on Jules,” Schafer said with a laugh. “So I just hope she’s gotten to chill out and be a regular teenage girl.”
In the meantime, Schafer has been promoting the psychological horror film “Cuckoo,” which had its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival in February. She also stars alongside Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley and Hong Chau in Yorgos Lanthimos’ upcoming anthology film “Kinds of Kindness.”
“I’m so flattered that they have included me in the list of main actors and everything,” Schafer said of “Kinds of Kindness.” “I’m in it, truthfully, for one scene. I filmed for one day.”
“I was so thrilled though because I’m a huge fan of Yorgos, so I was thrilled that he thought of me and it was a really wild — I’m gonna tell the story at some point when I have time — wild day of filming,” she teased.
The GQ Global Creativity Awards spotlights multidisciplinary creatives whose work and contributions are breaking boundaries and driving the culture forward. This year’s honorees included Schafer, actor and comedian Danny McBride, F1 driver Lewis Hamilton, musicians Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, contemporary artist Lauren Halsey, Marni creative director Francesco Risso and singer-songwriter Asake. “Curb Your Enthusiasm” star J.B. Smoove hosted the evening in New York City, which featured live music by Matt Sweeney with Zoh Amba and Jim White.
Before presenting the award to Rossi, singer-songwriter Erykah Badu summoned a group of musicians and dancers dressed in reworked Marni archive pieces for a surprise fashion show. On stage, the musicians played a piece composed by Dev Hynes with an assortment of brass and percussion instruments, while the dancers pranced in between the dining tables.
“I’m pissed because I had a 15-person brass band plan to come in, and now they’re standing outside in the rain like a bunch of assholes,” Adam DeVine said jokingly on stage. “They saw Erykah’s crew and they’re like, ‘We’re not doing that shit.’”
DeVine talked about his “Righteous Gemstones” co-star McBride, calling him the “Leonardo da Vinci of dick jokes.”
“He changed the game for me when I saw ‘Foot Fist Way’ for the first time. It blew my mind,” DeVine said. “It showed a whole generation of actors and comedians and filmmakers that you don’t need to wait for the studio to allow you to do shit. You can go and be creative with your friends and if it’s undeniable, they’re gonna have to open the door for you, and Danny kicked that door open.”
At the beginning of his acceptance speech, McBride admitted he was completely out of his element because “I’m a grown man who doesn’t know how to tie a tie, but I’m obviously in a room with a lot of people who know how to tie ties.”
“When I told my friends and family that I was being honored with the Global Creativity Award, their first response is, ‘What the fuck is that?’” McBride said. “And then I’ll be like, ‘Oh, it’s from GQ,’ and they’re like, ‘Oh, that’s pretty cool,’ and then there’s like an ounce of respect for it.”
McBride continued, “But when they were truly impressed is when they looked at the names of all the other people that were being honored, and there were a lot of very impressive people doing a lot of very cool shit. So thank you, GQ, for including me in this list of very inspiring, creative, incredible folks.”
Other notable attendees included Michaela Coel, Ken Burns, Myha’la Herrold, Mellody Hobson, George Lucas, Nadeska Alexis, Mickalene Thomas, Antwaun Sargent, Morgan Spector, Tyrell Hampton, Willy Chavarria and GQ’s global editorial director Will Welch.
